Wiley and the Checkmates – We Call It Soul

  • September 8, 2009

Wiley and the Checkmates, founded in 1960’s Oxford, MS by Herbert Wiley, was a soul/blues act who performed alongside the likes of Otis Clay and Percy Sledge. With 02’s soul resurgence (Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Adele, Sharon Jones, Charles Walker, Betty LaVette) Wiley decided to revive the group. We Call It Soul has slow and down home blues vibe with upbeat funk grooves and memorable storytelling. Special guests include Ed Kollis (Elvis Presley, Leonard Cohen – harmonica), Regina McCrary (Bob Dylan, back-up singer), Tony Crow (Silver Jews – keyboard) and mixing engineer Mark Nevers (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Lambchop – mixing engineer). For fans of authentic blues, soul, and funk, Wiley’s We Call It Soul is a must-have.
