Brown Bird – The Devil Dancing

  • December 21, 2009

Providence band Brown Bird’s second full-length album The Devil Dancing features a dark blend of Americana and indie folk that brings to mind the somber folk of J. Tillman but with a more spirited punk vibe. Frontman David Lamb’s deep vocals and percussion drive the hypnotic rhythms while bandmate Morganeve Swain’s (voice, violin, viola, cello, ukulele) voice perfectly compliments Lamb’s crooning. The arrangement and choice of instruments highlight Lamb’s lyrical storytelling, creating a cohesive flow and sound throughout the album. The Devil Dancing is filled with rich and arresting harmonies and swift changes in tempo that range from a full on romp to the sedate, keeping the listener engaged. Brown Bird is one of my favorite up-and-coming bands of the past year and definitely indie folk at its finest. – Written by JFelton
