The Eternal – Sonic Youth’s debut album for NY indie label Matador – abandons the more mature sound of the past few records in favor of the noise rock experimentation that Sonic Youth is best known for. A vibrant and spirited release: “Sacred Trickster” and “Thunderclap” showcase two infectious indie rock songs and “Anti-Orgasm,” the album’s showpiece, is an angst filled anti- anthem that features both Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore’s vocals over hard-edged guitars. It is great to see that Sonic Youth still takes chances, experimenting and making supersonic noisy indie rock.
