Midlake – The Courage of Others

  • January 11, 2010

1960s British folk replaces 70s rock in Midlake’s latest release, The Courage of Others. This Denton, Texas, band worked diligently on the follow-up to their breakout album, 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther. Rather than write more 70s-inspired songs like Van Occupanther’s standout track “Roscoe,” Midlake pushed themselves to expand their sound and grow as a band. Influenced by Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, this quintet has opted for a darker, calmer sound. “Winter Dies” sounds exactly how it reads – cold, sad, foreboding. Midlake’s hard work has paid off with this album’s serious, beautiful new sound. – Written by DBosket
