Carolina Chocolate Drops – Genuine Negro Jig

  • March 26, 2010

NC trio Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, and Justin Robinson, a.k.a. Carolina Chocolate Drops, bring a modern bent to the tradition and history of African-American string bands like the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, Mississippi Sheiks and Mississippi Mud Steppers. Formed in 05 at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, NC, the trio brings energy, humor and flair to infectious acoustic tunes that include everything from fiddles and banjos to kazoos and whiskey jugs on Genuine Negro Jig. Standout tracks include a raw take on Blu Cantrell’s “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” alongside toe-tapping versions of traditional tunes like “Cindy Gal.” Genuine Negro Jig is a perfect record that balances the best sounds of the past with an acute awareness of contemporary music and how it relates to traditional sounds. – Written by JFelton
