I See the Sign, the latest release from modern folk singer Sam Amidon, continues the Vermont native’s self-described way of “recomposing” traditional folk songs by changing the rhythm and chords while maintaining the melodies and vocals. I See the Sign also benefits from the addition of strings and piano from Nico Muhly, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and producer Valgeir Sigurdsson. Even with Amidon’s musical reconfiguring and additions, the songs on I See the Sign are refreshingly simple, with an honest, rustic sound held up by his calm, even voice that recalls other soft-spoken vocalists such as Nick Drake and Damien Jurado. Beth Orton appears on the upbeat “You Better Mind,” and snuck in towards the end of the album is the R.
