Coming out of Athens (no, not Georgia), just a long stone’s throw from the legendary Muscle Shoals area, are the Alabama Shakes. Making their debut with a self-titled four song EP, this quartet is making waves with their own brand of 60’s southern soul and R&B embellished with garage rock type electric guitar. Naturally, the Shakes are grounded in the classic Muscle Shoals sound, complete with rhythm section. While the band performs as a tight, cohesive unit, what really binds the band is the amazing vocals of lead Brittany Howard. Even with just an EP to their name, The Alabama Shakes are a hot act and are only going to gain greater success; this is definitely a band to keep you eye on. – Written by JFelton
