Balto – October Road

  • September 29, 2011

With a backstory as dramatic as Balto’s, it is hard for the bio not to overshadow the work itself. Fortunately for Balto, that is not the case. October Road is a song cycle of lo-fi acoustic folk-rock that tells the story of singer-songwriter/guitarist Daniel Sheron’s solo seven month sojourn through Siberia. Sheron up and quit his job in Moscow, Russia and rode the rails, wandering through decaying cities, and meeting interesting people who inhabit the record’s tales. Upon his return to Brooklyn, Sheron gathered a few musician friends and recorded October Road in one day. What results is an album of Americana sounds with a well-rendered story of a modern Russian exile. Standouts include the opening track “The Railyard” and “Don Quixote.” – Written by SMarx
