The Black Twig Pickers – Rough Carpenters

  • January 30, 2013

Virginia/West Virginia Appalachian folk and bluegrass band The Black Twig Pickers return with a new album titled Rough Carpenters, their first full-length album since their 2010 release Ironto Special. The band consists of Mike Gangloff (fiddle, banjo, jawharp, vocals), Nathan Bowles (banjo, percussion, vocals), Isak Howell (guitar, mouth harp, vocals) and Sally Anne Morgan (fiddle, flat-foot dancing, square dance calling, and vocals). Rough Carpenters was born out of the same two-day session as 2012’s excellent Whompyjawed EP and like previous releases draws inspiration from traditional Appalachian music while breathing new life into classic songs. The album title sums them up the album nicely as the album is comprised of raw, unpolished live recordings that “celebrate the individualism that is rooted deeply in the land and people of the region.” Rough Carpenters is a rewarding release from The Black Twig Pickers and one that uniquely straddles tradition with experimentation and the future of Appalachian music. – Written by JFelton
