Carolina Chocolate Drops – Leaving Eden

  • April 23, 2012

Since the 2010 release of Genuine Negro Jig, great things happened for the Carolina Chocolate Drops, including winning a Grammy and opening for Bob Dylan on tour. The most significant change – the departure of founding member Justin Robinson – could have been a negative game changer for the string band, but, as evidenced by their latest release Leaving Eden, the Drops have only become stronger. Grounded by classically trained lead vocalist Rhiannon Giddens and multi-instrumentalist Dom Flemons, the newly expanded string band now includes Hubby Jenkins (guitar, mandolin, 5-string banjo, guitar, bones) and Adam Matta (beatbox, tambourine). Produced by the country/Americana music legend Buddy Miller (Solomon Burke, Emmylou Harris), the superb 15 song collection ranges from country, blues, and Afro-pop to jug band ditties and soulful gospel. Like their previous efforts, Leaving Eden pairs energy, tradition and powerful vocals with infectious acoustic tunes that include everything from fiddles and banjos to bones, leaving listeners satisfied yet eager for more. – Written by JFelton
