Cass McCombs – Humor Risk

  • November 23, 2011

Right on the heels of his spring 2011 album Wit’s End comes Cass McCombs’ companion piece, Humor Risk. This time around, the Baltimore singer-songwriter explores a lighter shade of dark, with a relatively upbeat and faster, more rhythmic set of eight folk-pop songs. McCombs’ lovely vocals remain gentle yet strong, whether singing detailed and introspective lyrics about love, heartbreak, pain, and isolation or as a technique for layering solo harmonies. While Humor Risk stands on its own merits, together the pair make a stunning diptych. Standout tracks include opener “Love Thine Enemy” and “To Every Man His Camera.” – Written by SMarx
