Irish guitarist Cian Nugent follows-up 2011’s acclaimed solo acoustic guitar album Doubles, and 2013’s expansive cosmic jam Born with the Caul, with Night Fiction. While deeply rooted in Nugent’s expressive guitar playing, this newest set more deeply showcases his singer-songwriter side with self-aware vocals and lyrics that somehow are an extension of his guitar playing. Standouts include: the solo instrumental acoustic track “Lucy”; the first-rate rocker “First Run”; the slow jam “Things Don’t Change That Fast”; the contemplative “Nightlife”; and the rocking 12 minute closer “Year of the Snake.” Night Fiction is another solid album from the ever-evolving Cian Nugent and the consistently intriguing Woodsist label. – Written by JFelton
