I’m admittedly behind the curve on Cicada Rhythm’s self-titled release as it came out this past October. Cicada Rhythm is comprised of married couple Andrea DeMarcus (vocals, upright bass) and multi-instrumentalist Dave Kirslis (vocals, guitar, organ, percussion), and their debut LP is an eloquent gem. Cicada Rhythm is a pared down and minimal frills album filled with mellow tempos, honeyed harmonies alongside polished instrumentation, and songcraft that perfectly captures the laid back Southern Gothic vibe. Standouts among the 12 tracks include: the tender opener “The Keeper”; the haunting love song “Static in My Dream”; the jazz touched “Round Yellow Suitcase”; the rocking “Dirty Hound”; the poignant “The Farmer”; and the closing track, “Ms. Eloise.” Cicada Rhythm is a truly superb record and enjoyable listen that has been on constant rotation since I first played it. – Written by JFelton
