Ethan Johns – If Not Now, Then When?

  • December 17, 2012

British record producer, engineer, mixer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns has produced some of my favorite albums of the past 10 years like Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker and Gold, Kings of Leon‘s Youth and Young Manhood, Whiskeytown’s Pneumonia, and The Jayhawks’ Rainy Day Music. In-between making fantastic albums for others, Johns has been slowly collecting songs of his own for his first album in two decades. If Not Now Then When? combines British folk influences with contemporary song structures, resulting a beautiful album that is both melodic and a humbling listen. Johns’ father Glyn, the legendary record producer and engineer (The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and The Who), takes over production duties on the album, which features guest spots from Laura Marling, Ryan Adams and Danny Thompson (Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, Roy Orbison). If Not Now Then When? is an album I highly recommend that you seek out. – Written by JFelton
