The Foghorn Stringband – Devil in the Seat

  • May 22, 2015

Portland’s The Foghorn Stringband may be one of the hardest working relatively unknown bands despite extensive touring and and a hefty discography. Comprised of two couples, Caleb Klauder (mandolin, violin, vocals), Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind (violin, banjo, guitar, vocals), Nadine Landry (guitar, double bass, vocals) and Reeb Willms (guitar, vocals), The Foghorn Stringband takes a vibrant, lively approach to traditional music. Their eighth album, Devil in the Seat, is another solid set of traditional folk tunes, Appalachian ballads, country waltzes, honky-tonk songs, bluegrass picking and beautiful harmonies. Highlights include: the fiery opener “Stillhouse”; the cover of Garry Harrison’s “Jailbreak”; the Willms and Landry duet “Mining Camp Blues”; the cover of Clyde Davenport’s “Chicken Reel”; and the murder ballad “Pretty Polly.” From start to finish, Devil In The Seat is filled with a killer set of down-home, foot-stomping music that defies the listener not to turn-up the volume and dance! – Written by JFelton
