Gospel Music – How To Get to Heaven From Jacksonville, Florida

  • June 7, 2012

Gospel Music, a side project of Owen Holmes of Black Kids, have released their first full length, How To Get to Heaven From Jacksonville, Florida. Following the success of 2010’s Duettes EP, Holmes stays true to his lo-fi indie pop sensibilities, this time working with local vocalist Madeline Long. Recorded in his Jacksonville home and mixed by Charles Newman (Stephin Merritt), the eleven tracks are inspired by the religious pamphlets he used to hand-out as a young Southern Baptist. However it is not the sacred but worldly matters of the flesh that interest Holmes in these succinct songs of love and affairs. Standout tracks include opener, “This Town Doesn’t Have Enough Bars For Both of Us”, “Let’s Run”, and closing single “You Don’t Have To Be Alone (But You Can’t Be With Me).” – Written by SMarx
