Grizzly Bear – Shields

  • September 5, 2012

Shields – the fourth album by Grizzly Bear – continues the evolution of the band’s expansive indie folk-rock. With a more raw, aggressive, and ultimately more accessible sound than in previous releases, Shields’ songs emit a more rock vibe. Whether or not it was the move away from the urban grind of New York City to record in the quieter environs of Texas and Cape Cod, singer/songwriters Daniel Rossen and Ed Droste found the space to write parts for each other for the first time, resulting in stunning sonic textures and beautiful melodies alongside intricately synchronized guitars, piano, synths, drums and warm harmonies. If you are new to Grizzly Bear or found their previous albums to be a challenging listen, then give Shields a try. – Written by JFelton
