Iron & Wine – Ghost On Ghost

  • April 22, 2013

Ghost On Ghost, the fifth album from the Texas singer/songwriter Iron & Wine (a.k.a. Sam Beam), was produced by Beam’s longtime collaborator Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats) and follows the vibrant 2011 release, Kiss Each Other Clean. Where Kiss Each Other Clean was bolder and hesitant, Ghost on Ghost is colorfully laidback folk-rock that draws more broadly from Americana music while adding funk and jazz embellishments. The songs still come loaded with a studio full of musicians, among them Tin Hat Trio, Sex Mob, Antony and the Johnsons, and Bob Dylan’s band. Some highlights on Ghost On Ghost are the lively jazz-pop on “Caught in the Briars”, the light funk of “Low Light Buddy of Mine”, the country-soul influences on “Desert Babbler”, the twinkling pianos on “Joy”, and the smoky jam “Singers and the Endless Song.” Beam has a unique ability retain the warmth and intimacy of his early works on this lively, infused album, simultaneously expanding his sound while remaining characteristically Iron & Wine. – Written by JFelton
