Jim James – Regions of Light and Sound of God

  • January 31, 2013

Regions of Light and Sound of God is the debut solo album by My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James. After falling offstage and injuring himself in 2008, James’ had some down time while recovering and began experimenting with music inspired by God’s Man, a 1929 graphic novel by Lynd Ward that “chronicles an artist’s struggles with temptation and corruption, along with finding true love.” In what was a very personal undertaking, James played almost all instrumentation and incorporated analog and digital recording techniques. What results is a sound that is complexly layered while maintaining an intimate and mesmerizing quality, in contrast to My Morning Jacket’s more grandiose, reverb soaked, delicate, ethereal, and warm tones. Regardless it’s an interesting project and listen from James. Notable tracks include the lovely instrumental “Exploding”, the upbeat pop of “A New Life”, and the haunting “God’s Love to Deliver.” – Written by JFelton
