Joe Henry – Reverie

  • November 24, 2011

Open the window and let the world in – that is the method behind the brilliant twelfth album of American singer-songwriter Joe Henry, Reverie. Henry is highly regarded among peers as a talented musician, but is more popularly known as a Grammy winning producer for diverse acts including Solomon Burke, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, Louden Wainwright III, and The Carolina Chocolate Drops. His latest finds Henry exploring a multiplicity of genres, from jazz to folk, from gospel to blues with friends Mark Ribot (guitar), David Piltch (bass) and Jay Bellerose (drums), while sharing intricate narrative lyrics. The fourteen songs were all recorded in his home studio with the windows open to capture natural ambience, adding a layer of texture behind his emotional vocals and acoustic instrumentation. Reverie is the perfect album for a chilly autumn afternoon; standouts include “Sticks & Stones”, “Strung”, and closer “The World and All I Know.” – Written by SMarx
