John Reischman and The Jaybirds – Vintage and Unique

  • August 24, 2011

Juno nominated band John Reischman & the Jaybirds have been playing together for a decade, and their fifth album Vintage & Unique is a stellar collection of 14 traditional and original bluegrass tracks. Reischman is a superstar in the genre, known and revered for his masterful mandolin playing, vocals and all around contributions to acoustic music including his longtime membership in The Tony Rice Unit. With the superbly orchestrated collaborations of his colleagues Greg Spatz (fiddle), Trisha Gagnon (bass, vocals), Jim Nunally (guitars, vocals), and Nick Hornbuckle (banjo), Vintage & Unique is a rare album of true musical accomplishment and beauty even on classics like Bill Monroe’s “The First Whippoorwill” and Hazel Dickens “Gabriel’s Call.” Standouts include “Lancaster Sound”, “Gold Mountain”, and “Bittersweet Waltz.” – Written by SMarx
