John K. Samson – Provincial

  • February 28, 2012

John K. Samson – best known as the founder of the indie rock outfit The Weakerthans – recently released his first solo full length inspired by the four main roads leading out of his homeland of Manitoba, titled Provincial. In contrast to his early exploits in the punk band Propagandhi, Samson leans towards the quieter side of The Weakerthans’ sound, re-recording two songs from his recent solo EPs with more expansive, chamber pop arrangements. Together the twelve tracks weave a story of life in the northern realms, from disappearing towns to ice hockey, examining the metaphorical rugged roads mired with cracks and disrepair. While mainly quiet and intense, Samson’s Canadian pride shines through in walls of upbeat rock, moments of punk attitude, and a call to induct former NHL player / Stanley Cup winner Reggie Leach into the Hockey Hall of Fame. While an accomplished music veteran, Samson still manages to impress with his solo debut. – Written by JFelton
