Jolie Holland – Wine Dark Sea

  • May 30, 2014

Jolie Holland’s career has spanned five solo albums, two live recordings, and an album with The Be Good Tanyas, drawing on a wide range of influences from jazz to blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll to folk and country. Holland’s latest release, Wine Dark Sea, brings another set of multilayered Americana music that is less inhibited than past albums and filled with a bigger, richer, and bolder sound. This evolution is in part Holland’s maturation as a singer/songwriter as well as the result of recording with a much larger band (at least seven musicians play on each track). Album highlights include: the opening track “On And On”, the piano ballad “First Sign of Spring”, the enchanting first single “Dark Days”, the Joe Tex cover ‘The Love You Save’, and the retro-soul ballad “Waiting For The Sun.” Wine Dark Sea is another great addition to Holland’s expansive discography. – Written by JFelton
