Mapache – Mapache

  • May 11, 2018

Mapache is the L.A. duo Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci, and moniker originates from the Spanish word for “racoon” – a name they received by showing-up to a gig after a sunburned day at the beach with big circles around their eyes. Finch and Blasucci are also members of the acclaimed Grateful Dead cover band “Grateful Shred”, so it’s no wonder the duo’s country-folk vibe evokes 60’s/70’s bands like The Byrds, Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Flying Burrito Brothers and themes of nature, peace, and harmony. The collection of songs on Mapache’s debut is filled with dueling acoustic guitars, soulful soaring harmonies, rich melodies and a timeless quality that many of their influence’s share. Standout tracks include: the earthy opening track “Mountain Song”; their version of “Aquellos Ojos Verdes” (“Those Green Eyes”); the contemplative “In the Morning Light”; the stirring single “Follow Me Down”; the rambling “Chico River”; and the lofty avian ode “Songs to a Seagull.” Mapache’s self-titled debut is a solid record that taps in the best of parts of classic psychedelic music while continuing to sound fresh. – Written by JFelton
