The Mother Hips – Days of Sun and Grass

  • December 20, 2011

In commemoration of their 20th anniversary, seminal Bay Area psychedelic roots-rock band The Mother Hips have culled their tapes and pulled together a four disc boxed set of their first decade: Days of Sun & Grass: Unreleased Outtakes, Demos, B-Sides and Live Cuts from Chico’s Very Own 1990-2001. Volume One starts at the beginning, with founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono meeting at Chico State University; Volume Two follows the young band through the excess that comes with success on a major label; VOlume Three sees the band mature, striking out on indie labels and fine-tuning their craft. The final disc features select radio appearances and interviews. As with many great compendiums, also enclosed is a booklet filled with photos, articles and liner notes. Fans of The Mother Hips and those interested in the ephemera and evolution of rich musical collaborations will revel in this dense, fascinating collection. – Written by JFelton
