Night Beds – Country Sleep

  • March 5, 2013

Night Beds is 23 year old singer/songwriter Winston Yellen, whose solo full-length album Country Sleep is an introspective set of heartbreaking country folk. With his heart on his sleeve and a genuine and warm delivery that is pained and plaintive, Yellen’s ten songs tell of love and loss, which is understandable since these were written following a period when he quit college, lost his job and girlfriend and ended-up living in his car. Country Sleep begins with the bold a cappella piece “Faithful Heights”, and is followed by notable tracks including the harmonic “Ramona” and the twang-infused “Borrowed Time.” While inspired by indie folk acts like Bon Iver, Sun Kil Moon, and the pastoral folk of the Fleet Foxes, you can also hear glimpses of another Nashville artist in his earlier years – Ryan Adams. Fortunately for listeners, Yellen was able to channel his emotions into these touching works while renting a home once owned by Johnny Cash and June Carter, and I think Country Sleep is going to earn this young artist some well deserved critical acclaim. – Written by JFelton
