Phil Cook – Southland Mission

  • October 10, 2015

The impressive solo album Southland Mission by Phil Cook (Megafaun) was co-produced alongside his brother Brad Cook and sound engineer Jon Ashley (War on Drugs, Dawes, Avett Brothers) and enlists notable guest musicians: Justin Vernon, Matt McCaughan, Frazey Ford, and Matt Smith. Southland Mission is an upbeat mix that celebrates southern rural life with contemporary arrangements that take equally from the old and new. Standout tracks include: the upbeat Grateful Dead-esque “Ain’t It Sweet”; the Charlie Parr cover “1922”; the rustic “Belong”; the rambling “Great Tide”; the southern blues tinged “Lowly Road”; and the gospel infused “Time to Wake Up.” With such talent all around, it is no surprise that Southland Mission is fantastic, enjoyable album that leaves listeners looking forward to future releases. – Written by JFelton
