Sam Amidon – Bright Sunny South

  • August 12, 2013

London based American indie folk singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon is out with his sixth album – his first on the Nonesuch label – the excellent long-player Bright Sunny South. This collection of eleven acoustic folk songs includes covers of Mariah Carey’s “Shake it Off” and Tim McGraw’s “My Old Friend”, each “recomposed” (as Amidon likes to describe his process) so that rhythms and chords are changed while melodies and vocals are retained. This unique interpretation of traditional and contemporary works is complemented by Amidon’s clear, plaintive vocals. Working again with longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), this time Amidon surrounds himself with talents like multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily, Chris Vatalaro, and Kenny Wheeler on jazz trumpet. Standouts on this stellar album include the title track, “I Wish I Wish”, and “As I Roved Out.” – Written by JFelton
