Shimmering Stars – Violent Hearts

  • October 19, 2011

Vancouver, BC trio Shimmering Stars are out with highly awaited debut full length Violent Hearts. The fourteen swift tracks are delightfully filled with dreamy retro pop including Spectoresque harmonies, doo-wop rhythms and fuzzy reverb. The melding of 50’s/60’s sounds with modern day lyrics and hazy, lo-fi production (courtesy of their parent’s garage / recording studio) works well here, with the listener gliding along familiar structures then doing a double take with lyrics like “Walkin’ down the street/ And I wanna kill everyone I meet” just to be lulled back into romantic reverie by the captivating tunes. Standouts include the pining slow dance single “Privilege”, the melodic and upbeat “Dancing to Music I Hate”, and the catchy crescendo of “Other Girls.” – Written by JFelton
