Shovels and Rope – O’ Be Joyful

Charleston, SC’s Shovels & Rope are the talented husband/wife musicians Cary Ann Hearst (solo singer/songwriter best known her single “Hells Bells” which appeared on HBO’s True Blood) and Michael Trent (vocals, guitar – The Films).Their second album together, titled O’ Be Joyful – finds the duo settled on a band name (also the title of their 2008 debut) and tightening their mix of folk, rock blues, and country. I saw them perform at last week’s Pickathon festival and can attest to the energetic and fiery live show, which is captured in the eleven songs as well as in their spontaneous recordings at home, in their yard, van and even motels.
