Spectrals – Bad Penny

  • November 28, 2011

British musician Louis Jones (a.k.a. Spectrals) is back with delightfully vintage sounds on his latest full-length, Bad Penny. The one man band has expanded to include younger brother Will on drums, and the two turn out 11 brand new songs that display a slightly more expansive palette, blending dream pop and elements of garage pop (like synth) into a base of 60’s/70’s soul, Motown, Spector-esque girl group doo-wop. Thematically, the songs examine love in its many incarnations from the point of view of Jones, in all his 21 years; standouts include “Luck Is There to Be Pushed”, “You Don’t Have to Tell Me”, and “Get a Grip.” – Written by JFelton
