Strand of Oak – Hard Love

  • March 7, 2017

On Strand of Oaks’ new album, Tim Showalter leaves behind the electro kissed folk of past efforts for a more visceral indie rock sound. Hard Love finds Showalter still reeling from difficult experiences in his past while bringing his sound into the future. The collaboration between producer Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Spoon, Dirty Projectors), Showalter, and best friend guitarist Jason Anderson results in musical experimentation with “that loose, hedonistic” rock n’ roll vibe. Songs of note include: the title track; the Replacements-esque single “Radio Kids”; “Rest of It” which takes on a bit of a T. Rex vibe; the aching piano tinged “Cry”; and the psychedelic closing track, “Taking Acid and Talking to My Brother.” Hard Love is an effort for Showalter to expand both his thinking and creativity with his music. All-in-all, I think it’s a good effort, leaving me happily anticipating where he will go next with Stands od Oak.– Written by JFelton
