The Suitcase Junket – Pile Driver

  • August 22, 2017

Pile Driver is the fourth album by Matt Lorenz (aka Suitcase Junket) who performs and records in a traditional one-man band style. Lorenz a bit of a junker/picker who repurposes found items into instruments such as a suitcase kick drum and seat, a baby shoe hitting a gas can, a circular saw blade as a sort of bell sound, chicken bones, a cigar box and a hi-hat made from silverware, an 8mm film reel, and a beat-up guitar he found in a dumpster. Pile Driver is a collection of 12 songs showcasing his bluesy fuzzed out genre-bending Americana, solid songwriting and Lorenz ability to create stirring music from found objects. Album highlights include: the hot and sweaty blues track “Evangeline”; the rootsy rockabilly rocker “Jackie”; the bluesy “Swamp Chicken”; the folk ditty “Busted Gut”; the traditional country of “Ten Rivers”; and the declaration of love on “Red Flannel Rose.” Pile Driver is a solid effort from the eclectic singer/songwriter, and if you get the chance to see him live, you will not be disappointed. – Written by JFelton
