Sun Kil Moon – Among The Leaves

  • July 16, 2012

Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters) returns with his fifth album as Sun Kil Moon, Among the Leaves. Like 2010’s excellent Admiral Fell Promises, Kozelek uses fingerpicked nylon string guitar and his characteristic hushed and hazy vocals over the course of seventeen introspective tracks. Lyrically, Among The Leaves treads familiar melancholic territory, this time coupled with sardonic humor evident even in titles of singles like “I Know It’s Pathetic But That Was the Greatest Night of My Life” and “Not Much Rhymes With Everything’s Awesome At All Times.” There are many serious turns with Kozekek meditating on aging, death, and the lost musical talents of Richard Collopy, Elliott Smith, and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). Kozelek’s brooding delivery is layered with hypnotic folk melodies, making “Among The Leaves” another fine accomplishment. – Written by JFelton
