TELEKINESIS | 12 DESPERATE STRAIGHT LINES

MERGE

Michael Lerner, aka Telekinesis, has returned with his sophomore full length, 12 Desperate Straight Lines. It’s been two years since his debut Telekinesis!, and the Seattle-based musician has put together a dozen power pop songs that all have an optimistic beat and melodic hook. Like his recent EP, Parallel Seismic Conspiracies, which was also produced by Death Cab’s Chris Walla, Lerner displays an affinity for power chords and sensitive vocals (that sometimes recall Ben Gibbard). For the most part, the songs are pretty breezy, straightforward indie rock that is more akin to Guided By Voices than any of the latest fuzz-pop, diy, lo-fi garage trends these days. This is a great spring release with a lot of energy. – Written by JFelton

TELEKINESIS | PARALLEL SEISMIC CONSPIRACIES

MERGE RECORDS

People’s ears pricked up last April on Record Store Day, after hearing Telekinesis’ 7-inch release, “Dirty Thing.” The brainchild of Michael Benjamin Lerner, Telekinesis puts out straightforward power pop that has unrelenting drums, power chords, and some damn fine hooks. While fans wait for his sophomore release later this year, Lerner has a brisk EP out right now is just a bit over 10 minutes long. Parallel Seismic Conspiracies is five tracks, including a full-band version of “Calling All Doctors” and a cover of Guided By Voices’ “Game of Pricks.” For the most part, it’s just a longer version of the “Dirty Thing” 7-inch, but this is a great EP to tide you over until February when 12 Desperate Straight Lines comes out. – Written by DBosket

MERGE RECORDS

Michael Lerner – the sole member of Telekinesis – writes, sings and performs all the songs on his debut album. Joined by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) on the production of the album, they recorded and mixed each song on analog, fully crafting one song at a time before moving on to the next one in the development of the album. Lerner, a talented multi-instrumentalist and particularly skilled percussionist, delivers a record of fearless vocals and big-hearted in-the-moment songs full of intense emotions.
