THE MAGNETIC FIELDS | 69 LOVE SONGS
The Magnetic Fields’ ambitious and beloved 69 Loves Songs has finally been released in the most romantic format: vinyl. The ‘99 triple album is now available in a limited-edition release, comprising six 10” records, the original booklet, and an MP3 download coupon. For anyone unfamiliar with this album, 69 Love Songs is Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields’ magnum opus about love, expressed 69 ways with heart, humor, sweetness, darkness, and despair. For people both single and attached, this is a memorable concept album that more than holds up over 10 years after its original release. – Written by DBosket

THE MAGNETIC FIELDS | REALISM
The Magnetic Fields’ third Nonesuch release Realism is the counterpoint to the noise pop feedback sounds of 08’s “Distortion.” Recorded in the stairways, hallways, and bathroom of Merritt’s old NYC apartment, Realism is a mostly acoustic “variety folk” album. Despite the contrast to its companion album, Realism maintains the trademark Magnetic Fields sound with a gothic folk twist in the use of toytown piano, knelling banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, banjo, cello, violin, accordion, tuba, and tabla drums. While Realism continues to explore themes of truth and fiction found on Distortion, fans of the Magnetic Fields should be intrigued by this unplugged counterpoint. – Written by JFelton
