THE VEILS | TROUBLES OF THE BRAIN EP
Finn Andrews, frontman and driving creative force for The Veils, has put out a self-released EP that was recorded at home and produced by Bernard Butler (Suede, The Libertines). Seven tracks long, Troubles of the Brain is a brief but memorable set of pop songs that are highlighted by occasional shimmering keyboards and deft mandolin. T. Rex has often been cited as a current influence for Andrews, and one can certainly hear Marc Bolan’s presence, especially on “The Stars Came Out Once the Lights Went Out” – a jaunty little tune that also has a touch of Arcade Fire with its poppy tempo and similar vocals. Other standouts include the emotional ballad “Grey Lynn Park” and “Bloom,” an upbeat track peppered with some dreamy keyboards. – Written by DBosket

THE VEILS | SUN GANGS
The Veils’ third album Sun Gangs is the product of Finn Andrews, son of Barry Andrews the XTC keyboardist. Unlike his father, Andrews’ music has closer ties to singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen rather than the rock–soul–punk–reggae hybrid that was XTC. Sun Gangs presents an even more varied musical showcase ranging from piano ballads to distorted indie rock, reflecting different moods throughout the album. While this is not a totally new concept for the band, their previous releases are also eclectically varied in style and mood, Sun Gangs pushes the band’s tonal diversity to a new level.
