WYE OAK | CIVILIAN
Indie rock duo Wye Oak – Baltimore’s Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitar) and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack (drum, keyboards, backing vocals) – are set to release their third album, Civilian, on Merge Records. Built around the concept that “everyone wants to be normal, but no one truly is”, in the course of ten songs, Wye Oak explores isolation and loneliness through the rich, fuzzy soundscapes of guitar, percussion, organ and spaces of silence. Forgoing their usual self-production, this time at the helm is celebrated producer John Congleton (Modest Mouse, The Thermals, Shearwater), resulting in finer production values and a deeper focus on songwriting duties. – Written by JFelton

WYE OAK | MY NEIGHBOR/MY CREATOR
Baltimore indie folk duo Wye Oak delivers its third release My Neighbor/My Creator less than one year after the much praised The Knot, which was easily one of my favorites from 09. My Neighbor/My Creator is a vibrant 5 track EP that brims with melody and features a few choice older tracks and a couple new tunes, including DJ Mickey Free rapping on the last track. Collaborating with external producers for the first time, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack’s new songs feel loose and direct, from the tumbling opener “My Neighbor” to the energetic “Emmylou.” The combination of Wye Oak’s honeyed vocals, the lush, strummed guitar and electronic flourishes is instantly likeable. – Written by JFelton

WYE OAK | THE KNOT
Baltimore duo Wye Oak’s Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitar) blend folk with keyboard-laced indie-pop/rock, atmospheric timbre and expansive male-female vocal harmonies. Wasner’s downhearted croon delivers lyrics about youth, dreams, and personal experiences backed by lush guitars and catchy bass hooks. The Knot incorporates elements of classic indie rock (a la Yo La Tengo) with elements of reverb-infused Americana and the whimsy of shoegaze. The Knot is haunting and contemplative indie music at its finest. Due out July 21 on Merge.
