Tift Merritt – Stitch of the World

  • April 11, 2017

I’ve been a Tift Merritt fan ever since a friend gave me a copy of her demo which later became her acclaimed 2002 debut Bramble Rose. With the strength and consistency of her catalog of music, I’m surprised she has not been a huge hit with larger audiences. On Stitch of the World, Merritt returns with another top-notch American roots release showcasing her lyrical storytelling and honey-textured vocals. Produced by Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) who also contributes acoustic guitar and backing vocals while bringing together a stellar set of guest musicians, Merritt’s sixth studio album includes guitarist Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), Eric Heywood on pedal steel (Son Volt), and drummer Jay Bellarose (Paula Cole). Highlights include: the rockabilly tinged “Dusty Old Man”; the gorgeous ballad “Heartache is an Uphill Climb”; the delicate piano based track “Icarus”; and the haunting “Eastern Light” which features backing vocals from Sam Beam. Stitch of The World is another beautiful album from the boundlessly talented Tift Merritt – give it a listen. – Written by JFelton
