tUnE-yArDs – w h o k i l l

  • June 29, 2011

Hot young band tUnE-yArDs – Merrill Garbus (vocals, multi-instrumental) and Nate Brenner (bass) – released their latest studio effort w h o k i l l. Defiant and talented, Tune-Yards subvert genres and push limits with seemingly discordant elements, creating a mish-mash sound of lo-fi feminist indie pop/avant noise pop/reggae/punk/afrobeat. The lyrics are just as powerful and confrontational – taking on poverty, sex, lies, and the police – all layered, and at times competing, with Garbus’ menacing wail, bass, percussion, sax, loops, and the omni-present ukulele. w h o k i l l is worth repeated listens; top tracks include “Bizness”, “Powa”, and “Riotriot.” – Written by JFelton
