The Wooden Birds – Two Matchsticks

  • August 17, 2011

The Wooden Birds is the current project lead by Andrew Kenny (former frontman of slowcore band The American Analog Set who also toured with Ola Podrida and Broken Social Scene) and their second album Two Matchsticks is a gem. The 12 tracks of folk-pop glisten with harmonies and glow with catchy melodies, enhanced by steady percussion, acoustic guitar and Kenny’s husky, whispered vocals. Two Matchsticks showcases an improved synergy of the band since 2009’s Magnolia, with Matt Pond on guitar, Sean Haskins on drums, and Leslie Sisson taking a more prominent role on lead guitar and vocals. The gang is joined on a couple tracks by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) with whom Kenny partnered on 2004’s Home Volume V. Standouts include the title track, “Company Time”, and “Folly Cub.” – Written by SMarx
