Yo La Tengo – Fade

  • February 25, 2013

Fade, the 13th studio album from Yo La Tengo, is the culmination of 25 years of sonic experimentation that includes free jazz, indie pop, garage rock, surf pop, folk and Velvet Underground inspired drone-rock yet remains characteristically their own. The first album with producer John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Jim O’Rourke) hones arrangements that are more layered than usual. Guitar noise shines; “Is That Enough” and “Before We Run” even have strings. Standouts include the fingerpicked, folk inspired “I’ll Be Around”, and “Cornelia and Jane” with its whispery vocals over muted brass. Yo La Tengo’s years of experimentation and cohesion as a band is what drives the songs on Fade, making for a solid album that grows more satisfying with each listen. – Written by JFelton
