Bizi Gara – Horsebat

  • June 8, 2010

Native Parisian painter/musician Baptiste Ibar’s (a.k.a. Bizi Gara) second album Horsebat is a collection of songs with wandering folk beats and seductive, roots inspired rhythms. For Ibar, musical and artistic collaborations are thoroughly intertwined. Best known for the series “Disastrology Calendar” commissioned for Michel Gondry’s 06 film, The Science of Sleep, starring Gael García Bernal and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Ibar has also worked with Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple, who started his career as a mural painter in NY. Recorded in his small Brooklyn studio, Horsebat embodies the meaning of the Basque phrase “bizi gara” which translates to “we are alive” with distinct and engaging rhythms and melodies, as well as atmospheric cadences that draw upon a number of roots and world music influences. Standout tracks include the bewitching “I Believe in Love”, the expansive raga “Your Pants” complete with handclapped rhythms, and the gentle “Mamina” performed in French. – Written by JFelton
