Annie and the Beekeepers – Squid Hell Sessions

  • April 7, 2010

Boston’s Annie and the Beekeepers’ sound is based around three part harmonies, folk, country and bluegrass from Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals). Following a well-received self-titled debut, the six track EP Squid Hell Sessions showcases a collection of new songs and live favorites that are rich and melancholy. Squid Hell Sessions features bluegrass melodies alongside striking vocal harmonies. Some highlights include the heartfelt confessional “Like a Dog” and “The Wine Song” which infuses country/bluegrass hooks and soulful R&B style vocals. This EP is a polished, melodramatic country-folk album that moves between downhearted to clever upbeat ditties while sounding simultaneously old-fashioned and fresh. – Written by JFelton
