Gem Club – Breakers

  • October 31, 2011

Together, Somerville, MA musicians Christopher Barnes (piano, vocals) and Kristen Drymala (cello) are Gem Club, and their first full length collection of dream pop, Breakers, is outstanding. Following the release of their Acid and Everything EP in the summer of 2010, the pair has been garnering critical praise; even the video of the French horn infused track “Twins” recently made it’s debut on NPR’s All Songs Considered. Reminiscent of Low, yet residing firmly in their own sound, the classically trained musicians spin gorgeous piano and cello ballads, at times symphonic and sparse, but always lush. Their cover art is a gauzy affair with a myriad of white tones and shades of grey, very similar to their music which is contemplative, memory bound, and fleeting. For beautiful, atmospheric music, listen to “Breakers.” – Written by JFelton
