Black Mountain – Destroyer

  • October 24, 2019

Vancouver Canadian psych rock outfit Black Mountain follows-up 2016’s IV with their fifth album, Destroyer, their heaviest and most polished albums to date. Over the past fourteen years, Black Mountain has experimented with a number of nostalgic rock sounds from the 70’s, this time more akin to Black Sabbath and KISS. Destroyer features a new lineup that includes: frontman Stephen McBean, Rachel Fannan (Sleepy Sun), Adam Bulgasem (Dommengang), Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips), and Kid Millions (Oneida). Standout tracks include: the down-tempo “Horns Arising”; the finger-picked acoustic number “The Writ”; the space rock-infused “High Rise”; the tripped-out “Pretty Little Lazies”; the catchy psych-pop track “Pictures of Matchstick Men”; and the hypnotic closer, “FD72.” Though not as trippy or psych heavy as its predecessors, Destroyer still manages to fit perfectly into the Black Mountain’s catalogue while rocking harder than ever before. – Written by JFelton
