Charles Wesley-Godwin – Seneca

Morgantown, West Virginia singer/songwriter Charles Wesley-Godwin’s excellent debut album, Seneca, vividly captures stories about his Appalachian home and its people. To quote Wesley-Godwin, his songs are about “hills where my grandfather worked” and that Seneca is filled with “human things” like failure, the ups-and-downs of marriage, and getting back to a simpler way of life. The album features unhurried, thoughtful and wistful songs alongside hard-driving rockers and toe-tappers. Standout tracks include: the honky-tonk number, “Hardwood Floors”; the reflective “Windmill”; the chronicle of a 50-year relationship in “Seneca Creek”; the love ballad “Strawberry Queen”; and the feel-good rocker “Shrinks and Pills.” Seneca is a poignant and honest portrayal of Wesley-Godwin’s life growing up in coal country and the people that inhabit it. – Written by JFelton
