Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest

  • November 4, 2010

Atlanta noise band Deerhunter veers further into pop territory with Halcyon Digest, their follow-up to 2008’s Microcastle. Sharing time with Atlas Sound, singer Bradford Cox describes the new album as “a reference to a collection of fond memories and even invented ones.” A sense of nostalgia and sadness flow throughout the tracks. But the songs are also bolstered by a pop sensibility and sharp use of instruments and noise that make this an easy album to, well, digest. Cox, with singer/guitarist Lockett Pundt, drummer Moses Archuleta, and bassist Josh Fauver, spend part of the time channeling Brian Wilson (“Revival,” “Memory Boy”) and move into shoegaze territory (“Desire Lines”) before ending with “He Would Have Laughed,” dedicated to the late Jay Reatard. Happy, sad, fuzzy, sweet, Halcyon Digest is a great album that only improves upon repeated listening. – Written by DBosket
