The Details – The Original Mark EP

  • April 9, 2011

Winnipeg’s The Details follow-up their 2007 full length Draw a Distance. Draw a Border with The Original Mark EP — five tracks of straightforward alt-rock that showcase some nice melodies and arrangements. It was produced by the Weakerthan’s Stephen Carroll and recorded by Brandon Reid, who has worked with the National. Opening title track “The Original Mark” gets off to a running start with a fast beat and dramatic tone while “Surface Breaks” reminds a little of ‘90s/Toad the Wet Sprocket with its poppy tone and strong guitars. “Uniform” and “Strings and Ribbons” are slow, alt-country ballads that have some nice moments, but Jon Plett’s vocals don’t always fit in with the down-and-out, “there’s a tear in my beer” tone of the songs. The Details’ next full-length, Lost Art, comes out at the end of May. – Written by DBosket
