Psych rock band Dr. Dog follows-up 2016’s philanthropic release, Abandoned Mansion, with Critical Equation – their tenth album in 20 years as a band. Critical Equation is another great LP featuring the quintet’s ebullient blend of soaring harmonies, upbeat melodies, mesmerizing rhythms, catchy guitar hooks and clever songwriting. Produced by Gus Seyffert (Ryan Adams, Ben Harper) alongside Dr. Dog’s primary songwriting duo Scott McMicken and Toby Leaman, the band rededicates to its sound by tightening-up their creative process with a new set of polished originals. Highlights include: the pensive opening track “Listening In”; the rebellious “Go Out Fighting”; the atmospheric “Buzzing With Light”; the free-wheeling rocker “True Love”; the driving rocker “Heart Killer”; the blues driven “Under the Wheels”; and the dream-like ballad “Night.” On Critical Equation, Dr. Dog doubles down and strengthens the sound that got them this far, making this release essential to their discography. – Written by JFelton
